Our Wine Maker

John Schwartzkopff has had a rich and amazing history in the wine making industry. Joining Caudo vineyard in 2011 we look forward to working together with John to develop our own wine style and make our mark on today’s wines.

John joined wine industry in 1976 as Lab Manager for Renmano Wines. He spent 10 yrs at Leo Burings in the Barossa during the Eighties, then moved to Griffith in NSW Riverina for 5 yrs, then returned to the Barossa in 1996 as Sen Winemaker at Dorrien Estate, wine supplier to Cellarmasters.

Responsible for all the Bulk Commercial wine production, as well as working with some smaller boutique suppliers in the Yarra Valley, Mornington Pen, Bendigo and King Valley.

Working with these smaller wineries he was led to becoming interested in the less mainstream grape varieties like Tempranillo, Sangiovese and Pinot Gris, and the making of more complex, subtle food friendly wines, rather than straight out varietal expression.

Having worked with the excellent grapes from Caudo Vineyards for a number of years as a major supplier to Dorrien Estate, it’s a great chance to make some newer stylish wines from the vineyard.
