Dog Gone December

December school holidays rolled around and brought with them soaring temperatures and thunderstorms, but there were still plenty of relaxed, summer vibes.

Our patrons were treated to some fantastic rhythm and blues music early in the month by “The Boogie Men”. We situated them on the stage right on the banks of the river, where they mesmerized the swelling crowd.

Various businesses, community groups and families held their Christmas parties at the Cellar Door. They all thoroughly enjoyed our delicious food, wine and Sangria whilst winding down from what has been a tumultuous year.

We also introduced a brand new menu item – Loaded Chicken Nachos – crispy corn chips topped with spiced pulled chicken, corn, tomato, cucumber and red onion salsa, topped off with cheese and a house-made guacamole and chipotle sauce. The nachos are the perfect light lunch, and have been very popular with our customers over the warmer weather.

We closed the Cellar Door on the Wednesday before Christmas to give our hard-working staff a good break before the post-Christmas craziness began. We re-opened on Boxing Day and yes it was certainly that – crazy!! We were booked out constantly but unfortunately, Covid restrictions were bought back in and we had to turn away half of our wonderful patrons over this period.

This summer we have, and still are, experiencing a high river. Due to the rising water levels and the fast-flowing currents, extra care has been needed by boat owners and houseboats with the mooring on the river bank. We have had to ask boat owners to pack their own spike so they can be moored correctly and safely. We have also had to rope off an area on the bank to ensure the safety of everyone.

Near the end of the month, we finalized our tastings for our three new red varietals which will be bottled in the upcoming months. There will be a Merlot, Shiraz and Shiraz Cabernet to look out for, as well as our very popular Tawny Port which we sold out of last winter.

Stay safe and we’ll see you out for a refreshing drink under the shade of the gumtrees, right on the banks of the Murray, very soon!

Regretfully due to the damage we received to our grounds and buildings from the 2022 River Murray floods, our Cellar door is now PERMANENTLY CLOSED.
